As an adverb, either is usually used when one negative statement follows another, and it is placed at the end of the second negative sentence in place of too and also.
Examples:
- I can’t lend him money and I can’t lend you either.
- He said he didn’t like me, and his wife said she didn’t either.
- “I can’t spell very well.” “I can’t either.” Or “Me, either.”
As an adverb, neither is used to introduce a negative statement to add to the one that has just been made.
Examples:
- “I don’t like hairy spiders.” “Neither do I.”
- “I have never won much in a lottery.” “Neither have we.”
- “I can’t spell very well.” “Me, neither.”
