6. MUCH and MANY
  • Much is used with singular uncountable nouns, and many is used with plural countable nouns.

EXAMPLE: Don't put so much salt on your chips!
EXAMPLE: I saw many monkeys in the zoo.

 

  • Much and many can be used in negative sentences.

EXAMPLE: We don't earn much working here.
EXAMPLE: He doesn't have many fish in his aquarium.

 

  • Much and many can be used in question forms.

EXAMPLE: How much money do I owe you?
EXAMPLE: How many books have you read this year?

 

  • We use much or many in short negative forms without nouns in reply to questions.

EXAMPLE: Did you cook the pasta in plenty of boiling salted water? No, not much.
EXAMPLE: Did you see many bulls on the farm?" "Not many."
